This course has given me a great foundation for designing online content. Many of the course assignments were very effective in helping me develop these skills. Early in the course we had the opportunity to explore Web Quests that have already been created. This helped me to think critically about effective and ineffective designs. Things to consider when creating designs are proximity, alignment, repetition, contrast, consistency, graphics, and color. These aspects of design helped as I created a carnival flyer that demonstrated my ability to present information clearly. Another lesson involved coding a web page by hand in html. I completed a project using assistive technology to support a student in my class. I explored copyright law and created a presentation demonstrating my understanding. I also researched emerging technologies and created a presentation advocating the implementation of that technology. The culminating task of this course was to create a Web Quest for a class that I am currently teaching.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course and feel that I now have a much better eye for effective web design. The hands on tasks such as hand coding and creating a flyer were especially helpful in helping me develop skills. I have already taken many of the skills learned in this class and incorporated them into the courses I have created in a Learning Management System. Before this course I had very little knowledge of HTML. Now I frequently use it to take a look at what is behind the information we see on the screen. This has been helpful in embedding videos and creating information with the same format. I am also much more aware of design elements in my courses. I am much more proficient at using color and finding colors that work well together. I have a better understanding of alignment strategies. All of these elements can be effectively utilized together to create an effective presentation of content. This course has had a positive impact on the work I am doing.
