3.6 Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
Artifact: Emerging Technology
Reflection:
This artifact is a presentation highlighting the importance of investing in an emerging technology. I am recommending that schools invest in using IXL because of its many benefits. I describe how the resource supports the school technology vision and K-12 learning. Needs such as equipment and technical support are explained. I also discuss limitations of the program. I feel that the value of this far outweighs the limitations, as teachers are able to differentiate, address all content standards, and personalize learning. As I prepared this presentation, I did a trial run of this program in my own class. This gave me the opportunity to gain a much greater understanding of the value it brings. I also conducted research of data associated with this program.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 3.6. The standard states that I can collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. With the wealth of technology within the walls of our school, teachers are frequently trying new online resources. Within the math department teachers spend time collaborating as we select and evaluate resources for our classes. We use Unit assessments and state test data to determine the need and how effective these resources are. This resource is accurate and questions are frequently audited. The resource is suitable for all age levels. Skills practice is available that addresses varying skill levels and academic standards. The resource is compatible with our entire technology infrastructure. This can run on all devices that we utilize throughout the school.
Through creating this artifact, I feel that I have learned much more about selecting and evaluating digital tools. This can be a difficult task with the amount of resources that are available. It is important to be able to efficiently evaluate tools. This experience will be helpful to me in future decisions I make in my classroom. If I could change anything in this process, I would ask an administrator to give their input on the project. I think seeing things from their point of view would give me a completely new perspective of technology implementation. They are required to look at a much bigger picture than I do when I make decisions for my classroom.
This artifact has an impact on school improvement, faculty development and student learning. I feel that I am not much better at selectin technology resources. As I am able to locate better resources student learning will be directly affected. Putting better resources into the hands of students will support them as they reach a much higher level of understanding. As teachers work together, I feel that faculty development is impacted. As we collaborate with each other, we will find even better resources to use in our classrooms. Any time that you improve both faculty development and student learning, school improvement will be impacted as well. This impact can be assessed through benchmark assessments, state tests, and teacher evaluations.
