1.4 Diffusion of Innovations & Change
Candidates research, recommend, and implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and for managing the change process in schools. (PSC 1.4/ISTE 1d)
Artifact: Coaching Journal
Reflection:
This artifact is a journal written about coaching experience that I have. This experience gave me the opportunity to coach two colleagues. They are in the beginning phases of incorporating our district learning management system. I have several years of experience and am able to support them as they begin to use these resources in their classes. This was my first experience of working with colleagues in a coaching roll. I walked in with the expectation that they were on the same level as me with using technology. I quickly realized that everyone is on a different level and other people use resources in different ways. Not everyone has to use it the same way. As a coach, I need to find ways of supporting the way they want to use technology in their planning and teaching.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 1.4. I have the ability to research, recommend, and implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and managing the change process. Research was necessary in order to ensure that this experience was successful. Through research, I was able to use successful strategies for supporting teachers as they implement technology. I also had to be aware of effective tools that can support my colleagues. As I worked with each of my colleagues, I was able to recommend resources that was aware of. I implement many of the tools that I research and recommend for my colleagues. I also had the opportunity to support them as they implemented these resources into their classes.
I learned a lot through this experience. Before this experience, I had very little experience working with my colleagues in a coaching role. This experience has given me confidence with observing colleagues and making recommendations for what they could do in their classrooms. After this experience I feel that a technology coach is an essential position for all schools. There needs to be a person who works on researching effective technology tools that could be used in classrooms. This person could work closely enough with teachers to make recommendations and support teachers as they attempt to implement them. If I could have changed something with this experience, I would have done it at the beginning of the school year. An earlier implementation would give the other teachers much more time to learn and incorporate these resources. I would also like to be able to work as a full time technology coach. I feel that I could do a much better job as a coach if I had more time to get into teachers classrooms and see how they are using technology.
The work that went into this artifact has already had an impact on school improvement, faculty development and student learning. The teachers that I worked with are much more proficient with using the technology tools that we worked with. Their students have benefited from that implementation. As the use of technology spreads the school will continue to improve. This impact can be assessed through benchmark assessments, state tests, and walkthroughs.
