1.3 Policies, Procedures, Programs & Funding
Candidates research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school, district, state, and federal technology plans and guidelines. Funding strategies may include the development, submission, and evaluation of formal grant proposals. (PSC 1.3/ISTE 1c)
Artifact: Instructional Technology Grant Proposal
Reflection:
This artifact is a grant proposal that was written for a technology resource. The grant proposal was written requesting this resource would be implemented primarily into a math classroom, but could be expanded to other subjects as well. The resource would be used to provide students with unlimited practice and immediate feedback. While creating this artifact, I described what I would like to accomplish, how the resource is exemplary technology integration, how the tool will be used, professional development, and a budget. This was a great experience in writing a proposal. I am now comfortable with requesting help when I need funding for a resource I would like to use in my classroom.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 1.3. I am able to research and recommend strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and managing the change process. I am also able to implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations. With the changing world of technology, I am frequently researching for ways of implementing technology. In order to initiate the use of technology teachers need access to available tools. They also need tools to continue to be provided in order to sustain technology use. Many resources are available at no or very low cost. Sometimes the best resources can be expensive. The schools budget is often not large enough to take on the expense of trying a new technology resource. This magnifies the importance of being able to request grants from outside resources. With the ability to effectively request grants from outside resources, I am confident that I am now able to research and find the best resources for my classroom and school. The outside funding makes it possible to sustain the use of these resources. Through the creation of this artifact, I was able to recommend strategies for using this technology. This specific resource can be used in a variety of ways. It could be used for test prep, pre testing, post testing, or practice. I personally have accessed the free trial of this resource and implemented it into my classroom. The implementation for my classroom was for test prep. If I had access to this resource for an entire school year, it could be used to help personalize learning.
I learned a lot through the experience of creating this artifact. I am able to identify resources that are going to make a lasting impact on my school. I learned how to develop a plan for using these resources. I am now much more confident on requesting help from outside sources for the funding of technology resources. If I did this grant, again I would include more than just one class in the proposal. IXL has resources for several academic subjects and even includes foreign languages. I would consider writing a department wide proposal where I include all teachers in the math department who are interested in implementing the resource. Another possibility would be to create a team of teachers who teach different subjects and write a grant that includes several different subjects.
The work that went into this artifact has already had an impact on school improvement, faculty development and student learning. Initially this grant will just affect my classroom, but as it proves effective this resource could spread to teachers throughout the school. This would lead to professional development opportunities, as teachers would have the opportunity to learn about the resource. Student learning will be positively impacted, as they will give opportunities for unlimited practice and positive feedback. Anytime you improve student learning and develop the faculty I feel that the school is improving. This impact can be assessed through benchmark assessments, state tests, and walkthroughs.
