5.1 Needs Assessment
Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. (PSC 5.1/ISTE 4a)
Artifact: Teacher Technology Assessment
Reflection:
This artifact is a paper written about a technology assessment that I completed for an individual teacher. The purpose of this assessment was to create a baseline before providing one on one coaching sessions. Two surveys were used to measure his levels of technology integration. An interview was conducted in order to determine specific strengths and weaknesses. A needs statement was developed based on the previous assessment and surveys. With the needs assessment completed it was possible to develop a coaching plan that would address the needs of an individual teacher’s classroom.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 5.1. The standard states that I can conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional leaning programs. Through this experience, I was able to conduct a needs assessment to determine the needs of a faculty member. This needs assessment assisted me in identifying areas that would make the greatest impact in the faculty members classroom. Later, I was able to use the needs assessment to inform one on one coaching sessions with this teacher. The needs assessment assisted in deciding what forms of technology we would be working with. It was also able to guide me in creating a learning experience that would be meaningful to this faculty member. In addition to this experience, I have worked with the school technology team to assess school-wide, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses.
Through creating this artifact, I feel that I have learned much more about assessing the technology needs of colleagues. I learned several strategies for identifying strengths and weaknesses. This experience has also given me more confidence as I attempt to address and support the needs of colleagues. If I could change anything about this experience, I would have developed a needs assessment for the entire math department. This would give us a view of what things we are doing well and ideas for what we can do to improve on our weaknesses. I look forward to taking what I learned through this experience and applying it in future opportunities.
This artifact impacts faculty development and student learning. The work conducted with the specific faculty member will improve his implementation of technology. His students will stand to benefit from the additional resources that will begin to show up in their classroom. A needs assessment is a valuable tool and could be used to assess a wide variety of areas within a school. It has the potential of impacting everyone in the building. This impact can be assessed through teacher and student surveys. Classroom walkthroughs could also be used to measure this impact.
