2.5 Differentiation
Candidates model and facilitate the design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences making appropriate use of differentiation, including adjusting content, process, product, and learning environment based upon an analysis of learner characteristics, including readiness levels, interests, and personal goals. (PSC 2.5/ISTE 2e)
Artifact: LMS Coursework Template
Reflection:
This artifact is a template containing many of the resources that I created within a learning management system. These resources are all a part of an online course that I created for an online learning experience for my students. The artifact contains components related to Introducing students to the course, basic support, community building, orientation, learning modules, assessment strategies, and evaluation. All of these components served as a foundation for a course that I would later fully develop and implement into a class that I was teaching. My contribution was creating or organizing all of these resources.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 2.5. The standard states that I will be able to model and facilitate the design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning. I will also be able to adjust content, process, product, and learning environment based on learner characteristics. I modeled a learning experience that provides students with the opportunity to analyze their future budget, home purchase and car purchase. The model includes detailed instruction, technical support and guidance, assessment, and collaboration opportunities. With all of these components of this course laid out facilitation will be possible. The course is designed to meet all accessibility standards and be intuitive for students to work through. With the model and design in place, the experience can be implemented with an appropriate group of learners. Students are given choice with content. In many cases, they are able to choose the items that they will be purchasing. Students are given choices with process. The modules are organized to where students can receive the material in a variety of ways. They would view a video, read an article, or do their own research of the topic. Students are given choices with the product that they will create. Students are able to demonstrate their mastery by using a variety of presentation formats, creating a video, writing a paper, or verbally demonstrating mastery through an interview. The learning management system provides students with the opportunity to choose their learning environment. They can choose to learn in the classroom, at home, or anywhere they would like. Learner characteristics are analyzed in a variety of ways. All assignments are evaluated and the data is continuously used to determine the needs of individual students.
Through creating this artifact, I feel that I learned a great deal about a variety of tools within the learning management system. This experience provided me with the opportunity to explore new tools within the system that I have not before. I incorporated several discussion opportunities. I explained the overall design of the course and gave more instructions on how to access resources within the course than I have ever before. I also learned how to incorporate external tools into the learning management system. A couple of examples are YouTube and Google. The learning management system I used had hundreds of external tools to choose from. By using Google, sharing templates of documents worked seamlessly with my students. If I could change anything with the course design at this point, I would use a feature from the learning management system called mastery paths. This feature is incorporated into modules and assigns students a certain path based on their level of mastery on a given assignment. I feel that this tool would be a great resource for further differentiating instruction in the class.
The work that went into this artifact affects student learning. A weakness of mine before starting this course was organizing content within a course in the learning management system. This experience has helped me to better organize content, provide orientation opportunities for students, and other resources that guide them through the material. This skill will continue to impact my students in a positive way for years to come. This impact can be measured by student performance in a course. It can also be measured by analyzing evaluation responses by students who are completing the course.
