2.3 Authentic Learning
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences. (PSC 2.3/ISTE 2c)
Artifact: Engaged Learning Project
Reflection:
This artifact is an engaged learning project completed in the fall of 2017. The purpose of this project was to create an assignment that encourages students to reach higher LoTi Levels. Students are working in groups. They are collecting data from a determined population. Students were expected to analyze their data and create a presentation. They had the opportunity of taking on a professional role and sharing their product with individuals outside of the school. This addresses all levels of Blooms Taxonomy and high LoTi Levels. I analyzed standards that this project would address. I also created learner objectives, an introduction, and a process for completing the project, described how technology could be used, and found opportunities for students to share their work to a broader audience.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 2.3. The standard states that I can model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences. In this artifact, I modeled a learning experience that provides students with the opportunity to think deeply about statistics and create a presentation that will be shard beyond the classroom. This model includes a description of learners, a period for completion, standards, objectives, a process to follow, the final product that will be created, and technology that will be used. Everything needed to facilitate this lesson is included. I am able to engage students in an authentic learning experience in many ways. I have facilitated the collaboration of students as they collaborate on a shared Google spreadsheet. I have used learning management systems to have students explain their learning through discussion boards. Students have had opportunities to act as professionals as they use skills that will be needed in future careers. This experience is authentic, because if provides many opportunities for students to practice these skills. Students have the opportunity to use an online survey creator to collect data. Students are able to use spreadsheets to analyze their data. Students create a video presentation that will be shared with peers at school and with community members beyond the walls of the school.
This project really opened my eyes to the potential of technology creating an engaging learning environment. I was able to create an opportunity for students to use technology to research a topic. They were also able to collaborate with peers within their classroom and mentors outside of the classroom. They were also able to share their work with a broad audience. If I were to do anything differently with this project, I would attempt to include more of a variety of subjects. Currently the task addresses standards in a math and language arts classroom. It is possible for students to work in their history classroom to identify historical significance of their data. They could also link their project to things that they are learning in their science course. This would be a great opportunity for students to see how everything is connected.
This project will have an impact on school improvement, faculty development, and student learning. I now have a much greater understanding about how technology can have an impact in the classroom. As I become more comfortable with using this technology, I will share it with other members of the faculty. As more faculty members implement these strategies student learning will be positively impacted. All of this will lead to school improvement. This impact can be assessed through benchmark assessments, state tests, and classroom walkthroughs.
