Artifact: Copyright
Reflection:
This artifact is a presentation about copyright and fair use. In the presentation discusses the meaning of copyright and fair use. The presentation focuses on the ethical use of audio visual works. Three types of audio visual works discussed are feature films, YouTube videos and videos recorded off air. Explanations are provided for when each of these forms of media can be used in the classroom. There are also common scenarios described and explanations of the ethics of the scenario. I conducted research to find information about when teachers are able to use this in their classroom. I created these scenarios to help the reader better understand the process.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 4.2. The standard states that I can model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. In this presentation, I model and facilitate the legal use of digital information as I describe when it is legal to use several different types of media in the classroom. I also discuss the ethical use. It is important to respect the creators of this media and give credit to them. When using digital media in the classroom we always need to consider the age of our students and if the media is safe and healthy for them. It is important to keep all of these criteria in mind then utilizing digital technology for classroom instruction.
Through creating this artifact, I feel that I have learned a lot about how copyright and fair use apply to the classroom. All of the criteria for a feature film makes sense. The film must be acquired legally and shown to a classroom. I found it interesting that a movie cannot be shown if viewers are invited. There seems to be some variability in YouTube videos as each creator is able to choose settings. I found it interesting that you can post any video to your website if an embed code is provided. The most restrictive form seems to be videos recorded off air. You really need to pay attention to the rules before proceeding here. If I could change anything about this presentation, I would have included more forms of media. There are many resources that can be used in the classroom and it would be good to know about all of them.
This artifact impacts student learning and faculty development. I am now more comfortable with incorporating digital media into my classroom since I know more about it. This creates a much more engaging learning environment as I am able to make connections between what we are learning and the real world. I am also able to share the learning with other members of the faculty. This will also create more engagement in their classrooms. This impact could be measured by student surveys or classroom visits.
